MSDS Explanation Page

EXPLANATION OF SECTIONS

The following explanations are intended to familiarize the reader with the use of the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) supplied by Seaman Corporation. MSDSs do not have to follow any specific format but they do have to provide the same kinds of information. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) recommended MSDS format is the most widely used and is the model for the enclosed Data Sheets. The recipients of these data sheets can consult OSHA for additional information on compliance procedures. As a general rule, all applicable information categories are to be filled in. N/A will be used to declare that no applicable information was found for a specific category on the MSDS.

THE TITLE BLOCK

The Title Block on the first page of the Material Safety Data Sheet contains the Date of Issue and the MSDS Number. The MSDS Number appears at the bottom of all subsequent pages.

SECTION I - Product & Company Identification

This section provides the product/chemical identification; manufacturer or distributor, emergency phone numbers and a quick reference to applicable shipping information and HMIS (Hazardous Materials Information System) Codes.

SECTION II - Hazardous Ingredients

This section identifies hazardous chemical components and mixtures by their scientific name and common names where applicable. Safe exposure limits for workers are expressed in (PEL), OSHA's Permissible Exposure Limit and The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists' Threshold Limit Value® (TLV®). The only time you won't see the exact chemical component is if the chemical/or mixture is a "Trade Secret". However the exposure limits and other hazard safety information is provided.

SECTION III - Physical Data

Although this section may sometimes appear overly scientific, the information is very basic. If applicable and/or available, this section will list conditions that will change the chemical or product's form, which could affect the type and degree of the chemical or product's hazard.

SECTION IV - Fire and Explosion Hazard Data

This section is self explanatory in that it describes the chemical or product's flash point and explosion limits. It also describes what to use to put out a fire incorporating the chemical or product as well as any special hazards or fire fighting procedures to be aware of.

SECTION V - Toxicological Information

If applicable and/or available, this section will list test data describing the chemical's or product's effect as tested on living organisms.

SECTION VI - Health Hazard Data

Health Hazard Data provides critical information regarding human physical exposure to the chemical or product. It describes specific routes of entry (inhaling, swallowing, skin and eyes) and the type of hazard that may result from the exposure. Acute exposure will bring immediate effect and Chronic will take some time to express the effect. The final portion of this section lists first aid procedures to follow for accidental exposure.

SECTION VII - Reactivity Data

Reactive Data will provide information if there should be a concern about what could happen (the reaction), if the chemical or product is mixed with air, water or other chemicals. It also describes Hazardous Decomposition By Products that may result during decomposition.

SECTION VIII - Spill or Leak Procedures

This section lists or describes safeguards and disposal consideration in case of an Accidental Release or Spill of the chemical.

SECTION IX - Special Protection Information

This section describes personal control measures to be applied when working with the chemical or product. There are descriptions of protective clothing, appropriate ventilation, eye and face protection, respiratory precautions and hygiene practices - such as washing hands after working with the chemical or product.
